Berea First Baptist Church Summer Camp Ministry

Camp is a tradition that was started in 1967, in a very rustic wooded facility built by the CCC during WWII.  It is located in the town of Cheraw SC.  The camps are named Camp Juniper and Camp Forest, and are situated in Cheraw State Park.  But years of camping have shortened the name to the familiar, "Cheraw".

Camp is a three-week adventure.  One week is for our 2nd and 3rd graders, another is grades 4 - 7 and the last week is our 8th - 12th grades.  Camp is completely staffed by volunteers and church staff.  Camp is held the last weeks of June thru the first weeks of July

Camp is sharing.  A time where hundreds of our adults lovingly give their vacation time to work for and with our youth,  a time where our older youth volunteer to be counselors for our younger campers.  This work may be teaching, cooking, cleaning, music, cabin counselors and even van drivers.  Camp is a time where everyone comes together as one.

Camp is a place where we strive to get back to the basics, away from all the distractions placed in front of us each day.  A place where friends can get closer, where the adults of our church can be with our youth without outside influence, and a place where everyone can get closer to God and our true feelings about him.

Camp is fun.  Camp is the place where you sing songs you would never sing at home, play silly games that have no reason and get dirty and sweaty and never care.  There are no "hot" showers or air-conditioners.  There is a cool lake and lots of sno-cones.

Camp is spiritual.  This is a time where our youth can talk one-on-one with counselors, friends and our pastor.  Camp offers a chance to grow with God through small Bible Study groups, silent orders, evening worship in the chapel and by the lake, campfire devotion and individual cabin devotions.  All of this in a quiet setting, no loud music, (except at fun time), no TV's or computers, no cars and no distractions.
